Meet the team
Sophie K Yoon
Owner &
Wheel Throwing Instructor
“I’ve been working in clay for the last 10 years and when I was a little ceramics baby at CUNY Queens College, while I was studying to get my BA in Art Education, I knew opening up my own studio was always the dream. I worked as a studio manager, technician, instructor, assistant, essentially anything that got me into a studio - you could count me in. My personal work reflects a fascination of atmospheric firings, and I plan on being on this life long pursuit as long as my back allows me to sit at the wheel (hopefully forever!)
While running the studio, I will continue to create my own work and teach classes to emphasize how important it is for educators to continue their practice. I've been so lucky to have made a ton of friends and colleagues who are working artists that are gifted with the ability to teach. I'm so grateful to our team and excited for their future students to learn and grow here at Long Island Clay.
Long Island Clay is a culmination of years of experience, figuring out the details to build the ideal space for all levels of learners to experience clay. Coming from a small business family this is the work I am interested in, this is what I’m passionate about. I love being part of a community, I love walking into a space knowing I am surrounded by like minded people who just want to get their hands on clay.
I hope future students and members can see how much of my heart I’ve put into this studio to serve the community that has served me so profoundly.”

Laura Badke
Adult Wheel Throwing Instructor
“My journey through pottery started out as a hobby, and quickly turned into my passion. I have now been working with clay for over 15 years, as an artist and educator.
With a BFA and many years as a graphic designer I have always been inspired by art. My work is mostly wheelthrown but, I occasionally hand build pieces as well.
I have a deep appreciation for primitive firings - horsehair - naked rake and pit fire. I love the organic surfaces and the unknown is always a wonderful surprise.
Over the years I have taught in several studios on Long Island. Some of my work has been shown in various galleries on the Island, as well as online.
In classes, I emphasizes both technical skills and creative expression, encouraging students to develop their own style in ceramics.Teaching pottery is exciting to me. I love when students learn to take a ball of clay and create a beautiful piece.”
